WHY STUDY IN NORWAY AS AN INTERNATIONAL STUDENT

There are several reasons to study in Norway, but free education is above all.
Public Universities in Norway are offering free education to all the students of the world.
There is no tuition fee for more than 200 master programmes and under graduate programmes which are taught in English.

Universities in Norway are offering almost all subjects in taught in English e.g. master and under graduate degrees, Law, English Language Programme, Humanities, Social Sciences, Theology, Mathematics and Natural Sciences, Education, Medicine, Dentistry, Engineering, Development and Gender Studies, Norwegian for Academics.

No previous knowledge requires of the Norwegian Language for programs taught in English but students have to meet the English language requirements.

WHAT IS NORWEGIAN EDUCATION SYSTEM?

There are two types of education institutes in Norway, state funded or Government institutes and private universities.
Only few private universities and majority of higher education institutions are state run. All the universities in Norway (state funded) offer free education to all the programs and courses on all levels.
But private universities in Norway charge tuition fees for all courses.
In some graduate level and PHD level programs education is research based, universities provide the research opportunities and also research training.
Academic classes are also conducted on regular basis like in Bangladesh.
Students who have completed their education in Norway can easily take equivalence certificates from other countries because education institutions of Norway are following Bologna process of European higher education since 2003.

CREDITS & GRADING SYSTEM

Normally education/academic year consist of two semesters. Autumn semester starts from mid-August and ends in mid-December.
Spring semester starts from early January and ends in mid-June. Course credit system is called ‘studiepoeng’ which measures the course credit according to ECTS standard (European Credit Transfer System).
Grades are consisting of “A Grade” to “F Grade” which is similar to the grading system of Bangladeshi universities. “A” grade is highest and “F” grade is lowest, and “E” is minimum passing grade. However, in some particular exams pass or fail mark is also given.

STUDY OPPORTUNITIES IN NORWAY FOR BANGLADESHI STUDENTS

There are study opportunities on all level for Bangladeshi students who want to take admission in Norway. Normally there are three levels like we have in Bangladesh.

• Bachelor Study Program
• Master Study Program
• PhD

In Norway, there are 7 accredited Universities, 9 accredited specialized university institutions, 22 accredited university colleges, 2 accredited national colleges of the arts and several private institutions of higher education which offers study courses on all levels.

FEE, FUNDING AND SCHOLARSHIPS IN NORWAY

In this era of financial crisis, prices of all the basic needs are raising.
Especially in the last decade inflation level increased worldwide. This inflation effects the education also and cost of completing degree become more expensive. Fees of world top universities have been increased and it is difficult for the students to meet the higher education expenses.
But in Norway seen is totally different, completing education is fundamental right of every human being and Norway government is totally believing on it. That’s why in Norway universities and university colleges are public funded and they offer free education to all the students including students from Bangladesh.
Norway government believes that well educated people can be good part of Norwegian society so it makes it possible for everyone to complete their higher education without any cost.
There is no tuition fee charged by the education institutes from students from all over the world in Norway, international students are also provided free education.
But international students should keep one thing in mind that cost of living is more expensive in Norway than other countries of the world.
Normally no tuition fee charged from students in universities and university colleges in Norway but students are to pay NOK 300 to 600 as student union fee in each semester.
It is not the tuition fee but student union fee.
This fee grants many social benefits for free to students like membership in the local student welfare organization, which gives you various benefits during stay in Norway, which includes reduced fares on various public transport, lower ticket prices to cultural events and cinemas, campus health services, counselling, access to sports facilities and other culture activities.
Some scholarships for Bangladeshi students are also available by Norwegian Government but criteria is very high in order to obtain the scholarship.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS FOR BANGLADESHI STUDENTS IN NORWAY

Under-Graduate Studies:
The students who have completed intermediate from B.I.S.E or A-Level + 1 year university education is eligible to apply in Norway for under-graduate programme.

GSU-list should be checked for additional requirements to apply in Norway universities.
For some specialist fields of study from secondary school some additional admission requirements may be required by Norway educational institutions. Students should check with the institution for information about these special qualifications.

Masters Programmes:
16 years of education in Bangladesh is required to apply in master degree programs in Norway for Bangladeshi students. (Master of Arts, Master of Science, Bachelor with Honours, such as BBA, BCS and Bachelor of Science Honours).

Admission requirements can be varied from different universities and university college based on an academic evaluation of the applicant. Top ranked universities demands good study background but in other universities admission criteria is bit low.

The program you will be applied for must be relevant to your studies. Normally degree must include courses equal to at least 1 1/2 years of full-time studies in a subject relevant to that of the programme applied for. In some cases, work experience counts as study relevancy or education.

PhD Programmes:
For Phd. or Philosophy of Doctorate 18 years of education (M.S, MPhil, or equal) from Bangladesh is required to apply for PhD programs in Norway.

PhD position announces on university website and you have to write the research proposal which is accepted by prospective supervisor and committee. However, in Norway PhD students consider as an employee of the university and get paid full salary from average 407,000 NOK to 530,000 NOK/ year depends on your research project, university and other factors. Permanent residence (PR) is granted after completion of PhD and paying 3 years of full time job tax.

MBBS in Norway for Bangladeshi students

Norwegian Universities do no offer any MBBS (Bachelor in Medicine, Bachelor in Surgery) program in English language.

However, Universities in Norway offer many master study programs related to Medical and Health education for international students. As we already mention above there is no tuition fee for studying in Norway so you can do Masters in Norway without paying the tuition fee.

University of Oslo
University of Oslo or simply called Oslo University offers 6 study programs 4 are Masters programs and 2 PhD programs related to Medical education. All programs taught in English for international students for free.

Master program offered by Oslo University duration is 2 years.
PhD programs at Oslo University duration is 3 years.

Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU)
Norwegian University of Science and Technology offers three master programs related to medicine and health studies.

• Master of Science in Molecular Medicine
• Master of Science in Physical Activity and Health
• Master of Science in Global Health

University of Bergen
University of Bergen offers two master programs related to Medicine.

• Master’s Programme in Global Health
• Master’s Programme in Biomedical Sciences

University of Tromso or The Arctic University of Norway
There are two master’s programmes offered by The Arctic University of Norway former University of Tromso. no tuition fee is charged for these programmes. These two programmes language of instruction is English.

• Master’s Programme in Bio Medicine
• Master’s Programme in Public Health
